Fieldwork Education

Fieldwork Education began in 1984 when our two founding partners, Martin Skelton and David Playfoot, both head teachers of two UK schools, made more formal some of the informal writing and consultancy work in which they were already engaged.

From the very beginning, our mission statement has been ‘Improving Learning’, coupled with a commitment to do so in ways that are founded on proven research but which are, at the same time, ‘practical, accessible and jargon free.’

Today, Fieldwork Education is much bigger. We now work together with schools all over the world to help improve learning in four distinctive ways: through our School Management Services, through Curriculum, through Professional Development support and through our Evaluation and Assessment programmes.

Our School Management Services division helps start up new schools and provides the ongoing educational management of new and existing schools.

Our curriculum; the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), was launched in 2000. Since then this child-centred, highly engaging, rigorous, cross-curricular and internationally-minded curriculum has been chosen by over 800 schools in more than 59 countries around the world. Our curriculum expertise is recognised elsewhere; we are currently engaged in developing and writing a national government curriculum too. Our Professional Development division designed and delivers the International Leadership and Management Program (ILMP) in collaboration with NAHT and ECIS. This rapidly growing program develops skilled, effective and inspiring school leaders throughout the world. Since the ILMP’s successful introduction in 2003, we have also introduced the ILMP-UK and the ILMP for Middle Leaders. We also provide, through On Course for Learning, bespoke courses, conferences and consultancy for schools, school clusters and larger organisations.

Our work supporting the Evaluation and Assessment of children’s learning is focused around Looking for Learning, a process that helps you to directly identify the learning in your classrooms, and improve and increase the amount of learning that happens in every lesson, every day. It is also focused around Assessment for Learning and our Learning-Focused Reviews, which provide you with an external assessment and validation of the quality of learning in your school.

Fieldwork Education is part of the WCL group which owns the British Schools of America and the Compass International Schools.
